Spring Fling Tournament: Game 3

My third game was against a newer Blood Angel player. If some of his models look familiar, that's okay. I lent him some of my Blood Angels so he wouldn't have to proxy for the tournament.

5 Tactical Marines w/ heavy flamer, Rhino

5 Death Company w/ jump packs
5 Terminators w/ heavy flamer

5 Devastators w/ missile launchers

The mission was Cloak and Shadows, using Hammer and Anvil deployment. I deployed poorly, failing to taking into account the arrival of the Golden Host. The Blood Angels deployed on the front of their deployment zone, with the Rhinos in the open, the Death Company hidden behind terrain, and the Devastators in good position in elevated cover. I got first turn.

Spring Fling Tournament: Game 2

My next game would be against a Chaos Space Marine army using the Word Bearers Grand Host detachment from Traitor Legions.

Word Bearers Grand Host

Command

Sorcerer with jump pack

Sorcerer

The Lost and the Damned

Dark Apostle
10 Cultists

Favored of Chaos

Daemon Prince of Tzeentch w/ wings
8 Possessed w/ Mark of Tzeentch
8 Possessed w/ Mark of Tzeentch
7 Possessed w/ Mark of Tzeentch

The mission was the Spoils of War with Dawn of War deployment, on a table with a trench line running through the middle. We both knew that was where most of the fighting would take place.

Spring Fling Tournament: Game 1

Last weekend, we held a small "tournament" at my FLGS, with the goal of playing some lighter games of 40K with fun lists. All the games were Maelstrom missions of some sort with 1500 point armies. I took a Sternhammer Strike Force with the following:

Battle Demi-Company

Captain w/ bike, power fist, Shield Eternal, artificer armor = 205
Command squad w/ bikes, Apothecary, 4 storm shields, 2 power fists = 230
10 Tactical Marines w/ flamer, heavy bolter, Rhino w/ dozer blades = 195
10 Tactical Marines w/ flamer, heavy bolter, Rhino w/ dozer blades = 195
10 Tactical Marines w/ flamer, heavy bolter, Rhino w/ dozer blades = 195
Land Speeder w/ multi-melta, heavy flamer = 60
5 Devastator Marines w/ 4 lascannons = 150

Devastators
5 Devastator Marines w/ 4 missile launchers w/ flakk = 170

Ordnance
Thunderfire Cannon = 100

This is pretty much the list I posted before, but I dropped some meltaguns down to flamers and switched the Land Speeder to a cheaper armament so that I could take flakk missiles on one squad of Devastators.

My first game was Cleanse and Control, where each player just has 3 Tactical Objectives all of the time. My opponent was playing his new Genestealer Cult army for the first time.

Dealing with an Edition Change

In case you haven't heard, Games Workshop has pretty much confirmed that the 8th Edition of Warhammer 40,000 is around the corner. We don't know exactly when, and we know very little about the new rules, but we can make some guesses based on GW's statements and how Age of Sigmar has developed.

I've been playing 40K since the release of 3rd Edition, so I've seen a lot of edition changes. These range from very small changes like that from 3rd to 4th and 6th to 7th to more drastic changes like from 5th to 6th. The current situation with 7th Edition reminds me most of the transition of from 2nd to 3rd Edition. I didn't play 2nd Edition, but I was playing Fantasy at the time so I was keeping an eye on 40K. During 2nd Edition, 40K had moved from a small skirmish game to a battalion scale wargame. It was tied down by complicated rules from its smaller scale origin, and games took forever to play. Sound familiar?
